The Swingle Singers
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]The Swingle Singers have been challenging the boundaries of vocal music for over 60 years, earning 5 Grammy Awards and establishing themselves as one of the world's most beloved and admired vocal groups.
It began in Paris in 1962, when Ward Swingle sat a group of session singers down and had them sing Bach as if it were jazz. He wanted a sound "as if the singers were whispering in the audience's ear". The records that followed were a sensation, and what started as a vocal exercise became the sound and approach the group has carried ever since.
Today, that same instinct runs through everything they do, taking music apart and rebuilding it for voices alone. Along the way they've collaborated with artists all across the musical map, among them Jamie Cullum, Kurt Elling, New York Voices and Labrinth.
Through every iteration, the group's signature sound has stayed unmistakable, and their arrangements built with intricacy and imagination. Close-microphone amplification and the range of seven individual voices combined into one blended sound that composers and arrangers have long admired for its versatility.
This is The Swingle Singers at their very best, with their reimagining of jazz, folk, pop and classical music alongside original songs of their own. It’s the set they’re proudest of and built to be heard up close.
